Why Heath Ledgers Joker Wouldnt Scare Joaquin Phoenix Away From Playing The Character

Few comic book villains come close to being as famous as their heroic adversaries, but The Joker is one of the few that's reached that level of popularity, as most people who know about Batman have also heard of the Clown Prince of Crime. For decades we've watched Batman and The Joker clash in numerous media projects, including three live action movies (four if you want to count Suicide Squad). But since last August, we've been learning more and more about a standalone Joker movie that isn't connected to the DC Extended Universe. As things stand right now, Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in consideration to play The Joker. Phoenix is still playing coy about his supposed involvement, but he has made clear that he wouldn't let Heath Ledger's lauded performance as Batman's cackling nemesis in The Dark Knight dictate whether or not he would take the role. Phoenix explained:

I don't know about that movie or character specifically, but I was thinking about it's interesting with comics there's different writers and artists that come on. It's different than this character from literature being uniquely that. There are different interpretations. It's so interesting; I was just thinking about it today, it seems so unique in some ways to comic books. I think there's probably room for that. Maybe it's like doing a play, like you always hear about people doing something, 'You should have seen this actor in this performance,' but then other actors do it and it's a different kind of film. I think that genre, comic books, kind of lends itself to having different people play the same character and interpret it in a different way. It's kind of built into the source material in some ways. I think it's cool when people do that.

Plenty of actors have put their own spin on The Joker over the years, including Jack Nicholson in 1989's Batman and Mark Hamill in various animated TV shows, video games, the list goes on. However, Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight has arguably become the most well-known portrayal of the character, and Ledger earned a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance. Joaquin Phoenix obviously still isn't willing to divulge to the public if he will in fact play The Joker, but as he explained to Collider, an actor playing a comic book character who's already been previously depicted is like how countless writers and artists create different versions of these same characters on the printed page over the decades. So even though Heath Ledger's Joker is incredibly popular, as long as the new version of Joker is different enough while still having a foot in the source material, Phoenix wouldn't be worried about playing someone like The Joker, or any comic book character who's already appeared on the big screen.

The Hangover director Todd Phillips is directing and co-writing the Joker movie, which will reportedly be a "hard-boiled crime drama" set in 1980s Gotham City . With so many actors having played the Joker in both live action and animation, whoever ends up scoring the lead role in this project, be it Joaquin Phoenix or someone else, would definitely have their work cut out for them. That being said, I would imagine that this Joker movie's unusual premise will help with made this version of The Joker stand out from his predecessors, and if the talented, award-winning Phoenix does end up taking the role, he could potentially deliver a performance that surpasses what Heath Ledger gave us a decade ago.

We here at CinemaBlend will keep you up to date on what's happening with the Joker movie and whether or not Joaquin Phoenix will play the character as more news comes in. In the meantime, Jared Leto is still playing Joker in the DC Extended Universe, and it expected to come back for Suicide Squad 2. A Huge Percent Of MoviePass Users See Fewer Than 4 Movies A Month

A Huge Percent Of MoviePass Users See Fewer Than 4 Movies A Month

For movie fans, the idea of MoviePass is extremely appealing. Being able to see basically unlimited movies in theaters for a low monthly rate is an enticing proposition that sounds too good to be true -- and still may be down the line. That has been the concern and repeated criticism of MoviePass' business model. With the service subsidizing the cost of tickets for its subscribers, MoviePass is losing money on those users who really take advantage of the service and see everything. Yet it turns out that these power users are not even close to the majority. In fact, most MoviePass users see fewer than 4 movies a month according to MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe, who recently said:

80% of our members see fewer than four movies per month, however we know there is a segment of moviegoers who use the service more frequently. We're grateful for the support of all our members and love the level of energy and enthusiasm they bring to our great offering.

This statement to Business Insider gives us a better idea of how MoviePass's subscriber base, which has grown exponentially since a price drop last year, is actually using the service. This breakdown still means that 20% or a fifth of MoviePass subscribers are seeing 4+ movies a month, which is probably more than what MoviePass would like. These users may be seeing every single movie that is in theaters, and thus MoviePass has to eat everything above the money it gets from the subscription. The national average ticket price in 2017 was $8.97, so even if users are seeing 3 or 4 movies a month, MoviePass is still likely losing money on them, unless they go to a lot of super discounted showings. Still, perhaps that 4 movie mark is the number MoviePass considers to be an acceptable and manageable loss.

The fewer movies MoviePass subscribers see per month, the better it is for the service's bottom line and sustainability. Naturally with most emerging technology and services like MoviePass, early adopters are going to be those more enthusiastic about the product and more likely to take full advantage of it. As time goes on people who are less likely to be power users will sign up. The same as insurance or gym memberships, over the long term, the service is likely hoping that the larger majority of its users use it more sparingly and offset the power users.

MoviePass has maintained that breaking even on tickets is good enough as it is continually finding new revenue streams and partnerships to make it more profitable. MoviePass has already taken steps to perhaps tamper down the frequency with which its most active subscribers use the service. After changing its terms of service, MoviePass made it so that subscribers could only see each movie once with the service, whereas previously you could see the same movie every single day for a month if you so desired. This change coincided with the release of Avengers: Infinity War, the biggest film of the year and exactly the kind of title that movie fans and probably many MoviePass subscribers would want to see multiple times. MoviePass claims that changes to its business model are helping keep it afloat and that all of the new changes with the service will not slow it down.

To see what movies you can see in theaters this year, either with MoviePass or the old fashioned way, check out our 2018 release schedule.

Farnsworth and Lowe both say that 88 percent of MoviePass subscribers see fewer than two movies per month, so restricting the service to four tickets per month will only impact 12 percent of its users. Apparently, that may be enough to dissuade the company from reinitiating its ticket-a-day offering.

Lowe has noted 88 percent of MoviePass users see fewer than two films in a month, so a majority of customers would still get great use out of the service. Nevertheless, this represents a notable change in the company's strategy, leaving some to wonder what else MoviePass could have in store in the future.

New Lego Movie 2 Trailer Makes Fun Of Chris Pratts Many Blockbusters

New Lego Movie 2 Trailer Makes Fun Of Chris Pratts Many Blockbusters

The LEGO Movie was something of a surprise considering just how good it was, making it the start of yet another franchise starring Chris Pratt. The former Parks & Recreation actor has come a long way now that he's the hero of numerous film series, and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part isn't going to let that joke pass it by, as the new trailer shows. Check it out.

The first part of this trailer we've seen before. the LEGO world that our characters live in has become a desolate wasteland following the events of the first movie. Things go from bad to worse when a spacecraft arrives and kidnaps Wyldstyle and most of the rest of our heroes, leaving only Emmitt, voiced by Chris Pratt, to save them all.

However, once he flies off to fo the rescuing bit, he finds himself being rescued by a brash and scruffy hero named Rex Dangervest. It turns out Rex is a galaxy defending, archeologist, cowboy, raptor trainer, which is a pretty eclectic and awesome set of skills. It's also, of course, a rundown of all the jobs that Cris Pratt's characters have had in his recent films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, and The Magnificent Seven.

Although Chris Pratt has yet to play an actual archeologist, though he has been rumored to be a possible successor of the Indiana Jones franchise, and maybe The LEGO Movie 2 thought that would be a done deal by the time it came out.

Of course, the rest of the joke is that Rex Dangervest is actually voiced by Chris Pratt as well. Making this yet another of his uber-macho characters.

Of course, the fact that Chris Pratt's other character, Emmitt the construction worker, is so much the opposite of the persona that Chris Pratt has built in movies in recent years, beyond simply being a yellow plastic toy, is part of the joke to begin with. In the first film, the character was the "chosen one" but even that was mostly just a joke and the character's averageness is what makes him so endearing.

The first LEGO Movie was surprising in just how good it was considering the fact that it based an entire story around interlocking bricks. Certainly, the bar will be raised that much higher for a sequel. How will The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part be able to shake up expectations considering how well received the first movie was? There's little hint of that in this trailer, but to be fair there was little hint in the run-up to the first movie either, so we'll have to wait and see.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be in theaters this February. In addition to the return of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett as LEGO Batman, the film will see the addition of new characters voiced by the likes of Tiffany Haddish, Stephanie Beatriz, and Arturo Castro.
