Kevin Smith Finds A Very Funny Connection Between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker And Affleck's Batman

Yesterday we got our first official look at Joaquin Phoenix in character for Todd Phillip's upcoming standalone Joker film. Because Joker is an origin story, we will see the character's transformation from a (presumably) regular person into the Clown Prince of Crime. This first image shows the man before that transformation, a man named Arthur Fleck. On its face, that name doesn't mean much, but filmmaker and noted Batman fan, Kevin Smith has spotted a funny connection between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and the actor who plays the Joker's nemesis in the DCEU, Ben Affleck. Take a look:

That's pretty funny. It's almost too coincidental. What is his middle name, 'Martha?' Maybe Joker writer-director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scott Silver are just trolling everyone, using the name of Joaquin Phoenix's failed comedian to deliver some meta-humor referencing the character's greatest foe in WB's separate DCEU films. Although, if Batman and the Joker really are two sides of the same coin, it would make sense that we see them reflected in each other in different ways, even if this film takes place in a separate universe. Of course, this is all probably just coincidence and the name Arthur Fleck was chosen for other reasons that have more to do with the character Joaquin Phoenix is playing before he sheds that moniker and becomes the Joker. But this coincidence will bring a deluge of 'Sad Affleck' memes nonetheless.

With Joker being divorced from the DCEU, this film will presumably have a lot of freedom to do things differently and put a spin on the character we haven't seen before, as well as inserting little connections and Easter eggs like this (even if this wasn't intentional). It's funny that Kevin Smith picked up on this, considering that he is a huge comic book fan who has collaborated with Ben Affleck multiple times in the past and is a defender of his Batman portrayal. Speaking of that portrayal, Ben Affleck is still Batman at the moment, but it remains to be seen if that holds true in Matt Reeves' Batman film. With the DCEU coming apart at the seams, maybe he could just hop in to Joker to give the actor one more opportunity with the character.

That said, much of Joker is still a mystery. Beyond the broad strokes of Arthur Fleck being a failed comedian living in New York City, we don't really know much about the film. And although I think everyone is expecting to see Arthur Fleck fully transform into a bleached skinned, green haired villain, we don't know if the story will show him coming in to contact with who will be his eternal enemy, Batman.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Frances Conroy, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. Joker is now filming and is scheduled to open in theaters on October 4, 2019. In the Star Wars universe, one of the big stories this week had to do with new Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran leaving social media allegedly after dealing with trolls and harassment online. Coming to her defense were people like Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill, but Stephen Colbert has taken things a step further, creating his own original Star Wars trailer just for all the trolls out there. As part of his monologue late last week, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert opened up about the potential Rose Tico issue, noting that there is "some troubling news from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" before recounting what reportedly happened to Kelly Marie Tran on social media. Colbert then proceeded to talk about the attacks on the "beautiful, talented young actress" before revealing he and the Late Show team had created their own version of Star Wars for all the trolls out there. In this version, Rose Tico is the hero. She is joined by Rey, who cut off the penises of popular characters like Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron and sent them into a deep, dark hole, leaving room for the ladies to take over the franchise. (Poor Finn isn't even mentioned.)

The whole thing is specifically designed for the trolls, and not even just people who like trolling the Star Wars franchise. The rest of the fake trailer reveals the "movie" will be populated by the female ghostbusters, the new female Doctor Who and even a lady wearing a Rick & Morty t-shirt---all the things trolls on the Internet love to hate. But the real clincher? Chewbacca was a woman this whole time. That's right Chewie fans, that's not a bromance between Chewie and Han, after all.

On a serious note, there were a lot of people who weren't pleased with the way Rose Tico was written in the 2017 movie, and many of those people have been vocal about their displeasure. Still, it's one thing to not be pleased about a character and to talk about criticisms in a calm manner with an even tone. It's another thing to go online and troll the person who played that character and make them feel bad about their race or gender. It's not the first time a Star Wars actress has left social media, either. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the franchise, left Instagram in 2016 after not being able to deal with people online, either. While Kelly Marie Tran hasn't outright said she left social media due to the trolls, it's not difficult to see why people online have made a connection.

On another note, if Stephen Colbert ever does decide to partner with Disney and Lucasfilm for an absurdist Star Wars comedy film, I'm all in. Because if there's anything the galaxy far, far away could use right now, it's probably a little levity. For now, if you didn't mind Rose Tico, she'll be back in Star Wars Episode IX, which is going to hit theaters on December 20, 2019. Here's what we know about the upcoming project.

The Mandy Trailer Promises The Craziest Nicolas Cage Performance Yet, Also A Tiger

It wasn't always this way, but these days actor Nicolas Cage is perhaps best known for his positively crazy performances and the meme-worthy facial expressions they often produce. Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider, Castor Troy in Face/Off, as well as roles in The Wicker Man, Bad Lieutenant and many other films have all established crazy as Nicolas Cage's brand onscreen. But for his latest role, it looks like he may have outdone himself. Check out the trailer for the upcoming thriller Mandy and what may be Nicolas Cage's craziest performance yet.

Cool, cool, I'm glad I have my nightmares all queued up for tonight. Oh well, at least they'll be colorful. I'm not sure what this movie is, but it looks positively bonkers. Mandy looks so fantastical, weird and unsettling that Nicolas Cage's crazy performance seems absolutely necessary and fits right in. This isn't a case of Nicolas Cage being in a different movie than everyone else, because he is very much at home here with his character Red. We see Red covered in blood, screaming like a crazy person, perhaps doubting his sanity and going on some sort of revenge tour by hunting with an axe Frailty-style. This is peak Nicolas Cage in a role that is seemingly tailored to his specific skills, and it looks absolutely awesome.

This is truly a striking trailer, and it's amazing how content that appears so violent can be so beautiful. There are several great shots in this trailer that are positively painterly. The use of color reminds me of the work of Nicolas Winding Refn, while the content has a distinctly Lynchian bizarre quality to it. Writer and director Panos Cosmatos looks to have crafted something truly unique here and is taking full advantage of the star's talents. Also there is a tiger, because why wouldn't there be, and who can argue that tigers don't elevate any movie they're in.

For those still curious what they just watched, Mandy is set in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in 1983. Red and Mandy, played by Andrea Riseborough, have their existence interrupted by a cult that murders Mandy. Red seeks vengeance against the cult and its leader and goes down a clearly fantastical and frightening path to do so.

Mandy premiered at Sundance earlier this year to positive reviews, with many citing the incredible performance of Nicolas Cage. It is easy to forget with all the fun the internet has at his expense that Nicolas Cage is an Oscar-winning actor who can give committed, intense and emotional performances, and that looks like what we're getting here. With a healthy dose of craziness, because of course.

Mandy opens in theaters on September 14. Before then, Nicolas Cage finally gets to play Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, which opens on July 27. Should Marvel Announce Its Entire Phase 4 Slate Post-Endgame?

On October 28, 2014, while still in the midst of Phase Two and around six months before the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel announced its slate of movies for Phase Three. It was like Christmas morning for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and comic book movies in general, as the studio laid out an incredibly ambitious plan that promised an expanding universe of new heroes and epic events.

That slate has changed a bit over the years, dates were moved around, Spider-Man came home, the Wasp teamed up with Ant-Man and the Inhumans were put out to pasture on ABC, but ultimately I dont think its controversial to say that Marvel mostly delivered on the promise of that slate and even exceeded those lofty expectations.

Now we are rapidly approaching the end of that Phase Three slate. Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters this weekend, the culmination of the MCUs 11-year, 22-film journey, followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in July, which, according to Kevin Feige, is the true end of Phase Three.

When we come to the end of something, we often look to the past and the journey that brought us here, but our eyes eventually inevitably turn towards the future. So as Marvel closes the book on The Infinity Saga, it is worth asking what comes next. To that end, we have to wonder if Marvel will announce its entire Phase Four slate (if it is called Phase 4) after Avengers: Endgame/Spider-Man: Far From Home? And to be more specific, should it?

It's not like we are in the dark about what the future of the MCU holds. In fact, we know quite a bit based on reports about projects in development, castings and the filmmakers hired for these future films.

The long awaited Black Widow solo movie is putting together an impressive cast, as is Marvels newest foray into the MCU cosmos, The Eternals. Director Scott Derrickson is returning for Doctor Strange 2, as is Ryan Coogler for the Black Panther sequel and (thankfully) James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Add in a Shang-Chi movie and you have a pretty impressive slate.

However, the studio hasnt officially announced these titles. Marvel has release dates carved out from next spring to the summer of 2022, but the movies coming out on those dates are still a mystery. That brings us back around to the question of if Marvel Studios should show all of its cards for the next chapter of the MCU in the wake of Avengers: Endgame.

On the one hand, the answer to this question seems obvious; of course Marvel should announce its entire Phase 4 slate post-Endgame. The Phase Three slate announcement seemed to work out fairly well and we already know some of the stuff thats coming, so we might as well have confirmation. It would also be a good move to get audiences excited about what the future holds after Avengers: Endgame concludes the current story.

From a fan perspective, who wouldnt want to know for sure whats coming and what we have to look forward to? Speculation is part of the fun of being a fan of these types of movies, and in some ways knowing whats coming gives us more to speculate about and discuss, not less. Just think about how awesome it was when we saw iconic comic book arcs reflected in titles like Civil War, Ragnarok and Infinity War. That hype was a magical feeling and I think wed all be down to experience it again.

However, there is a less obvious argument that Marvel shouldnt announce its entire Phase Four slate after Avengers: Endgame or Spider-Man: Far From Home. When Marvel made that Phase Three slate announcement way back in 2014, it was a mere two weeks removed from Warner Bros. announcing its own ambitious slate of DC films.

So it seems possible that Marvel didnt intend to announce all of those films right away, and only did so to let comic book movie fans and shareholders know that it was not ceding the crown anytime soon. This time around, there is no pressure for Marvel to announce everything if it isnt ready to do so or would prefer not to.

There is also something to be said for keeping fans in the dark and maintaining an air of mystery about what the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be moving forward. Because we really have no idea what this universe will look like post-Endgame. If you think about it, weve known that Thanos was the final boss the heroes would be facing at some point since the mid-credits scene in 2012s The Avengers. The Infinity Stones have been the through-line of The Infinity Saga and everything has built toward that Thanos encounter.

Right now, we may know some movies that are coming, but Phase Four has no such obvious path. We dont know what the contours of this next chapter will be. Is it building towards something like a big team-up movie as the previous phases have? Whats the connective tissue between an epic that spans tens of thousands of years, a former KGB spy and a master of Kung-Fu? We dont know yet and thats exciting.

If Marvel chooses to dole out information a little bit at a time, versus a dump of information revealing everything thats coming, well be viewing each film more as an individual piece versus how it fits into the larger narrative arc of "the Phase." That might result in less forward momentum, but there would be a greater potential for surprises.

For example, it doesn't seem like the X-Men or Fantastic Four will be brought in for a while, but we know theyre coming eventually. So whats more exciting: an announcement and a logo reveal as part of a press conference, or some sort of shocking tease in an end-credits scene? Obviously casting and development news can spoil future reveals, but I think there is merit to learning about the destination as part of the journey, not in advance of it.

Kevin Feige has indicated that Marvel has a three-year plan post-Endgame. The seven movies we believe are in the works are only enough to cover a little over two years of that at a rate of three MCU movies a year. Ultimately, I think that Marvel should announce some of its Phase Four slate after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, but I dont think the studio needs to or should announce the entire Phase Four movie plan right away. I want to know whats coming, but not everything, not yet.
