The Goldfinch Trailer Puts Ansel Elgort Through Emotional Hell

After Donna Tartts The Goldfinch became a literary hit in 2014, which included it winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal, it seemed like only a matter of time before a film version would come. Warner Bros swiftly struck a deal shortly after it was published and an adaptation is coming to the big screen this fall, with Baby Drivers Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson leading the drama.

As a good trailer should, this establishes the tone and interest in the movie without giving too much away about what audiences are in for. Ansel Elgort leads The Goldfinch as Theo Decker, a young man haunted by the day his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City while he was was 13 years old.

The films title references the priceless painting the mother and son gaze upon right before the bombing which Theo takes and keeps with him throughout his life journey chronicled in the film.

The Goldfinch trailer flashes between Theos past and present, carefully unraveling his personal tragedy and how it alters his life. He comes across various characters, including a childhood friend named Boris, played by Stranger Things Finn Wolfhard as a kid and replaced by Dunkirks Aneurin Barnard as they grow older.

The cast also includes Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Barbour, who is his caretaker for sometime, along with Luke Wilson, who plays his problematic dad who has a girlfriend named Xandra (Sarah Paulson). Westworlds Jeffrey Wright appears as Hobie, an unlikely friend to Theo during his time of loss.

Along with The Goldfinch having an impressive cast, behind the scenes is John Crowley as director, who previously helmed the Oscar-nominated drama Brooklyn. The script was written by Peter Straughan, whose other credits include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Frank and The Snowman. The movie was also produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who worked on Crazy Rich Asians, American Crime Story and Ben is Back together.

The Goldfinch novel was over 700 pages long, so the movie is tackling a ton of material for one film. It was previously considered for a miniseries, but the project ultimately landed with Warner Bros and Amazon Studios.

The Goldfinch certainly looks to showcase an especially good performance for Ansel Elgort, who broke out in 2014 with his Fault in Our Stars and Divergent roles. The 25-year-old actor will also star in Steven Spielbergs West Side Story remake coming in December 2020.

The drama is opening alongside crime comedy Hustlers, starring Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles and Lili Reinhart, about a group of former strippers who band together to steal from their Wall Street clients on September 13. Both films will go up against IT Chapter 2s second weekend at the box office.

Josh Gad Is Now Trolling Matt Reeves About Playing DCs Penguin

Despite the fact that it's one of the most highly-anticipated DCEU projects of the next few years, we still know very little about Matt Reeves' Batman movie. The supporting cast remains largely unconfirmed, but one long-rumored Batman villain continues to tease audiences about the possibility. That is right; it's about Josh Gad, as the voice of Frozen's Olaf has once again addressed the possibility of him stepping into the role of The Penguin in the DCEU. Check out his most recent tweet, below.

This whole ordeal started a few days ago when rumors surfaced suggesting that Matt Reeves was going to leave The Batman. The War for the Planet of the Apes director took to social media to calm fans down and assure everyone that he remains onboard The Dark Knight's next solo outing, leading to a series of online responses. Among them was Josh Gad's celebratory Adventure Time-themed GIF, which seems like a suggestion that he is still trolling fans (not to mention quite a few DCEU insiders) about the possibility of taking on The Penguin.

It definitely would make a certain degree of sense for a character like The Penguin to show up in The Batman. Rumors related to the project seem to suggest still that Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke remains onboard to appear as one of the leading antagonists, and Oswald Cobblepot looks like the type of Gotham City gangster who would hire Slade Wilson to take down the gothic urban locale's favorite vigilante.

Of course, we obviously need to note the fact that Josh Gad's tweet does not necessarily mean that anything concrete is moving forward. The Murder on the Orient Express star has continuously teased the possibility of him portraying The Penguin over the years, and we have heard next to nothing to suggest that it will actually happen. Having said that, fans have a tendency to get what they want these days, so enough fan enthusiasm to bring Josh Gad into the DC fold could ultimately make it a reality.

Regardless of whether or not Josh Gad will actually get to play Oswald Cobblepot in the DCEU, CinemaBlend will keep you updated on everything related to The Batman as more details become available. Matt Reeves' Batman film does not have a confirmed release date yet, but make sure to watch out for James Wan's Aquaman when Arthur Curry's first solo adventure debuts in theaters on December 21.

As Tom Holland's Spider-Man continues leaving his mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony Pictures has been developing its own series of Spider-Man spinoff films separate from the MCU. Venom will kick off this franchise, and one of the other projects in development is centered on longtime Spider-Man foe/anti-hero Morbius the Living Vampire. Now this spinoff has taken a couple steps further, as Jared Leto has been cast to play Morbius himself.

According to Variety, Jared Leto has been "loosely attached" to the Morbius movie for a while, but he wouldn't commit to the project until he knew it was heading in the right direction. Now he's fully on board, as he had a productive meeting with Safe House's Daniel Espinosa, who is now attached to direct the movie. Leto already has a little comic book experience under his belt playing The Joker in Suicide Squad, but Morbius reportedly isn't expected to interfere with him reprising the Clown Prince of Crime in future DC Extended Universe movies. Lost in Space duo Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama penned Morbius' script, and Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Lucas Foster are attached as producers.

Clearly Jared Leto was keen on dipping his toes into another comic book franchise beyond the DCEU. Last year, it was reported he was being eyed to play the lead in Bloodshot, Sony's other planned superhero movie franchise that draws on the Valiant Comics mythology. That didn't up working out, and Vin Diesel got the Angelo Mortalli role instead, but now Leto gets to play Michael Morbius instead. Introduced in 1971's The Amazing Spider-Man #110, Michael Morbius was originally a Nobel Prize-winnin biologist who suffered from a rare blood condition. In an attempt to cure himself, Michael inadvertently became a pseudo-vampire. He's now gifted with special abilities like super strength, flight, hypnotism and accelerated healing, but like "regular" vampires, he has to invest blood to survive, although it's rare his victims also turn into vampires. Morbius can also move about during the day, although he becomes weakened when struck by natural light. Outside of the comics, he's appeared in Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six, and he was also in consideration to be the villain for Blade II.

As mentioned earlier, Morbius is just one of several Spider-Man-centric spinoff movies Sony has in development. Silver and Black was originally supposed to be released next February, but it was recently taken off the schedule to allow more time to work on the script. It's also been reported that Spike Lee is attached to direct a Nightwatch movie, and news broke days ago that a movie based on Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, is in the works.

Morbius does not have an assigned release date yet, but supposedly production is expected to begin sometime this year. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates, and in the meantime, Venom will drop on October 5.

The Hardest Scene To Shoot In Solo: A Star Wars Story

The trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story have shown all sorts of interesting and exciting sequences the film will have in store for us, but one of them was significantly more difficult for one actor than the rest. In a recent Twitter Q & A, actress Thandie Newton, who plays the role of Val in the new film, revealed that for her, the train sequence, that we've seen some of in the advertising, required a lot of work from her over the course of several weeks in order to get right. It seems like it's one scene, it's the train sequence which, I'm not giving anything away by saying that, and the stuff that Val had to do in that sequence was shot over a number of weeks and I had so much stunt work to do to train for it and it looks amazing, but, wow, it was hard work.

We've seen some of the sequence that Thandie Newton mentions on Twitter in the trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story. We know that it is part of "the job" that Woody Harrelson is looking to put together a team for, though whether or not the train is the end goal, or a step in a larger plot, is not clear. It does look to potentially be the major action setpiece of the movie, which would explain why shooting it took several weeks to complete. Also, with train robberies being a classic part of many heist films, it makes some thematic sense for Star Wars to put its own particular spin on the trope. Rather than simply being a train, the vehicle is suspended above the ground and is flying past snowy mountains.

While certainly a lot of what we're seeing is CGI, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of real stuntwork involved for the actors. From what we've seen of Val in the lead up to Solo, she's been working with Woody Harrelson's Beckett for some time, so she's supposed to be an accomplished criminal. This means that her stunt work doesn't simply need to be "good enough," it needs to look like she's been doing it for a long time and is an expert at breaking into moving trains.

While most of us have to wait to see the finished product, the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story took place last week and the initial impressions of the movie are favorable. While not everybody loved it, it seems that most at least enjoyed it, which is good news for the film that went through more than its share of turmoil behind the scenes. The rest of us will get to see Val in all her glory starting May 25.
