The 3 Best Things About The Shape Of Water

It was a moment that felt like it came straight from the movies. At the end of the 90th Academy Awards, after seeing Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read this year's honored nominees for Best Picture, the award was called for director Guillermo del Toro's film, The Shape of Water. While there was some apprehension in the shadow of last year's big-ticket fiasco, at the end of the night, Del Toro himself confirmed with a nod and a grin that his masterpiece was the top honored film of the year.

Some viewers may have been surprised by the result, but even if they were, it's hard for them not to see why The Shape of Water would win the highest prize of 2017's awards season crop. The supporting cast of Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, and Michael Stuhlbarg all get their moments to shine as three dimensional characters who make the world of 1960's Baltimore come to vibrant life. But the wordless performances of Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones are the true heart of this film, as their primarily physical acting speaks volumes that mere words could not reach.

The Film Is A Subtle Reflection Of Our TimesGood sci-fi / fantasy takes the world we live in, and shows it to us with a flare that makes it familiar and yet fantastical. The Shape of Water does just that in its running time, as it weaves a story of fear and love involving the unknown. The disenfranchised are the heroes, the status quo is the opposition, and in the end, love conquers all. With love and understanding, the world of The Shape of Water becomes a better place for our protagonists -- and it encourages us to do the same in our daily lives.

Rampage Off To A Solid Start At The Box Office

Dwayne Johnson's Rampage is this weekend's major release and, while the weekend is just getting started, last night's preview screenings have gotten the giant monster movie off to a solid, if not impressive, start. Rampage brought in $2.4 million last night, which put well ahead of this weekend's other wide release Truth or Dare, but it was also significantly behind the preview total for the last action movie Johnson made with director Brad Peyton, the disaster movie San Andreas.

While Rampage's $2.4 million is nothing to sneeze at, it's a bit behind the $3.1 million that San Andreas brought in during the summer of 2015. That film was the rare action blockbuster not tied to an existing property of some kind. One would expect that Rampage, being based on a fairly well-known video game, would get something of a boost from the association. Although, Deadline says that the majority of those in the theaters last night appear to have been on the young side, and the 12 to 16-year-old demo, which apparently is looking to be the group most interested in Rampage, doesn't actually have a nostalgic association to the game, as it was released in arcades in 1986.

The Rampage arcade game was classic quarter muncher which had players take control of one of three giant monsters and gain points by destroying buildings and eating people. The new movie sees three animals mutated into massive creatures, one of which is looked after by primatologist Dwayne Johnson.

Rampage is expected to net somewhere in the $30-$40 million range over the course of the weekend, which will likely put it ahead of A Quiet Place which will be in its second weekend. Rampage certainly will be no Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was recently recognized as the highest grossing movie in the history of Sony Pictures. Since Welcome to the Jungle opened on a Wednesday during the holiday season there are no Thursday previews to compare to Rampage.

If the word of mouth coming out of Rampage's first weekend is solid the movie does have a chance to put together a strong second weekend. Rampage moved its release up a week following Avengers: Infinity War doing the same. This kept a weekend between the two films where no major studio tentpoles are being released. It's possible that some of the potential audience is waiting to see how the simple arcade title actually translates to the screen. If the audience buzz is positive, and so far it is (Rotten Tomatoes is giving the film an 81% audience rating as of this writing) people might give the movie a chance next weekend. Once Avengers: Infinity War arrives on April 27, there's a good chance the rest of the multiplex is going to be overlooked for a while.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Shazam!, Pet Sematary, And The Best Of Enemies Reviews

As we make our way into the fourth month of the year, we have a wide variety of features going into wide release. This week we have another big superhero blockbuster, terrifying burial ground, and a civil rights story. Get ready for Shazam!, Pet Sematary, and The Best Of Enemies.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Most superhero stories are geared toward a young mans fantasy. Get super powers, overcome obstacles, save the world. Its a pretty standard formula. And then sometimes you get a story in which the hero IS a kid who can transform into an adult with the super powers. Thats the fantasy cranked up another notch. Such is the case with Shazam! in which young Billy Batson must merely yell out the titular word and become a Superman-like hero. How he explores these new powers (with all of their ups and downs) is the theme of this latest addition to the DC Universe. It looks pretty great.

After stumbling out of the gate, the DC Universe is making something of a comeback. Three of their last four movies - Wonder Woman (93%), Aquaman (65%) and now Shazam! - have scored well with critics. Only the absolute mess of Justice League (40%) sandwiched in there was a stumbling block. Critics are really taking to this latest offering, appreciating the candid nature of the story and the fun-loving tone.

Dont let the comical misspelling of Cemetery fool you. Theres nothing funny about Stephen Kings story of an ancient burial ground that can revive the dead and turn the reanimated bodies into all-encompassing evil. Such is the case with Pet Sematary, in which the Creed family makes the bad mistake of buying a new house that just happens to have serious evil in the backyard.

Stephen Kings classics still hold up as horror fare, evidenced by the remake of IT (85%) two years ago. His storytelling and high concept plots translate well to the big screen and this latest fits the bill as well. Early sentiments are overwhelmingly positive with the Tomatometer sitting at 85% through more than 40 reviews. I don't think it drops all that much over the course of the week but it will just a bit. Pet Sematary looks creepy as hell and critics seem to enjoy the ride.

Based on a true story, Best of Enemies centers around the desegregation movement and the relationship between a Ku Klux Klan leader and an African-American civil rights activist - clashing over a local school system in the early 1970s. From an historical perspective, this flick looks like it hits all of the right notes without ever getting into the nitty-gritty. My fear with this kind of film is, in an effort to make it mass appeal to a large audience, the tone becomes more comedic/melodramatic rather than what was found in reality.

I don't think it looks bad, but rather a movie that doesn't really want to offend anyone. And I think the critics see it for that and the score doesn't quite get to "Fresh" status.

The Rotten Watch went one for two last week with The Beach Bum (Predicted: 47% Actual: 52%) falling within my range of succes. Harmony Korines story of Matthew McConaughey doing something like a career-achievement role as a stoner author living through a psychedelic background didn't land with the whole crowd. Moondog and his exploits weren't for everyone, and critics were basically split it right down the middle.

Coming in with some rather high expectations, Dumbo (Predicted: 67% Actual: 50%) ended up being a disappointment for Tim Burton and company. Despite the hype around the live action remake, critics weren't over the moon with the result, mostly agreeing it was a big time missed opportunity considering the source material. It finished right down the middle with both the positive and negative reviews carrying mostly the same theme. Most say it was underwhelming across the board.

How Black Panthers Cast Feels About The Controversial Wakanda Border Debate

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is a beautiful, action-filled comic book blockbuster, but not to be ignored is the surprising depth of its socio-political themes. The central nation of Wakanda is unlike any nation on Earth -- incredibly advanced thanks to its unique Vibranium mines -- but the fact that it's shut off from the rest of the world creates a fascinating conflict: do the immense resources manifest a responsibility for the country to help people beyond their borders, or does the horrible history of colonization and slavery in Africa justify their choice to stay hidden? It's the issue that ultimately drives the entire film -- so it may not surprise you to learn that the actors playing it out on screen have some strong opinions on the subject.

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with the cast of Black Panther during the film's Los Angeles press day, and my first question in every interview was exactly the same: if you were a Wakandan citizen knowing what you do about the rest of the world, how would you feel about the country's border policy? The responses I got were impressively diverse, and it was Lupita Nyong'o -- who plays Nakia in the Marvel film -- who pointed out the reason why: because I was hardly the first person to bring up the topic. Said the Oscar-winning actress,

While we were making this film, that was a debate we were having - as we were figuring out exactly how the story was going to unfold, and getting very specific about each of our characters and their viewpoints. We had long conversations about what Wakanda is facing and how we feel about it, because it is so relevant to the real world. I think the whole world at this time, lots of places in the world, are debating about what citizenship means, what nationhood means, what patriotism [means]. I would find in Nakia/Okoye conversations, or Killmonger/Black Panther conversations, I see the validity of each argument, and it is really a conundrum! How do you keep yourself intact, and also share? That is a question.

One very important advocate for keeping the borders of Wakanda secure in Black Panther is T'Challa himself -- and as it turns out, Chadwick Boseman shares the perspective. While most of the actors I talked to weighed both sides of the challenging argument in their responses, the star of the film made a straight argument for why the African nation is better off in isolation. According to Boseman, history and the incredible dangers of the outside world both contribute to the argument for staying hidden, but also worthy of consideration is the geography of Wakanda:

I feel like it's a conversation that... it's an ancestral conversation. It's one that tradition has proven, especially because of the history of Africa with colonialism and slavery, that in this specific case it's best for us to be hidden. Wakanda is an enclave where the mountains sort of protect it. Nature protects it. The idea of the borders being protected is part of what god intended because we were put here. I feel like the borders in that particular case, because of that history, have to be maintained to a certain degree.

The nation of Wakanda was founded on top of the aforementioned mine full of Vibranium, which found its way to Earth courtesy of a meteorite crashing down from space. Because of this, the country is naturally concealed within a crater -- which Chadwick Boseman seems to interpret as a kind of sign. If Wakanda were meant to interact with the rest of the world, it wouldn't be surrounded by natural walls.

Danai Gurira, however, disagrees. While her character in the film, Okoye, is extremely loyal to the classic traditions of Wakanda, she personally recognizes that Wakanda's relationship with the rest of the world doesn't entirely coalesce with where we are in modernity, and sees the border policy as archaic. Said Gurira,

It is a really deep and challenging question, and I could understand the Wakandan old policy. But then the idea that how do you justify continuing that policy? But then how do you preserve? I think for my character it was a conundrum, because she's a traditionalist... So the idea of how difficult it could be to secure a nation that has been secured in a specific way for hundreds of years, but also how do you become a modern part of the world? And so I think, as Lupita was saying, it's an absolute conundrum, but I do think that at the end of the day it becomes an outdated structure to live in isolation.
