Jean-Claude Van Damme Allegedly Was Coked Out Of His Mind While Filming Street Fighter

Jean-Claude Van Damme Allegedly Was Coked Out Of His Mind While Filming Street Fighter

Though it can still arguably be said that the video game movie genre has never produced a legitimately great feature, 1994's Street Fighter remains a cultural touchstone that many fans love to (sometimes ironically) return to time and time again. The movie has widely become known for its campy, B-movie greatness, but it also turns out that star Jean-Claude Van Damme was allegedly frequently on cocaine during the shoot. In a recent profile on the film, Street Fighter writer and director Steven de Souza explained:

I couldn't talk about it at the time, but I can now: Jean-Claude was coked out of his mind. The studio had hired a wrangler to take care of him, but unfortunately the wrangler himself was a bad influence. Jean-Claude was calling in sick so much I had to keep looking through the script to find something else to film; I couldn't just sit around for hours waiting for him. On two occasions, the producers allowed him to go to Hong Kong, and both occasions he came back late -- on Mondays he just wasn't there at all.

The production of Street Fighter was a notoriously troubled shoot, and Jean-Claude Van Damme apparently didn't make it any easier on the cast and crew. Arguably at the height of his power as an action star at the time of the film's production, the Belgian action hero was reportedly a frequent user of cocaine, which, according to Steven de Souza's remarks to The Guardian, made filming the movie incredibly tricky at times.

In the end, however, the film DID get made, and Jean-Claude Van Damme's Colonel Guile arguably remains one of the most memorable (and also utterly absurd) characters in the entire movie. Check out one of his best scenes, below!

Of course, in the years since Street Fighter debuted, Jean-Claude Van Damme has found ways to carve out a new reputation for himself as an actor and an action star. Though his heyday in the genre has arguably passed, he has since taken a far more self-aware approach to himself by embracing comedy and self-parody. These opportunities have seen him become a well-known commercial star, as well as the villain in The Expendables 2 and even the star of his own Amazon series called Jean-Claude Van Johnson, which was recently canceled by the streaming service.

The Street Fighter adaptation remains an odd moment in the video game movie genre's history, and we will continue to bring you more updates related to all of the films in this particular subgenre as new details are made available to us. Until then, you can head over to our movie premiere guide to learn more information on this year's biggest releases!

The movie based on the video game was directed by Steven de Souza who recently gave a tell-all interview to The Guardian about overcoming a military coup while filming, Chun-Li actress Ming-Na Wen punching one of the actors so hard he cried, and how allegedly out of control Jean-Claude Van Damme was on set.

Jeff Goldblum Remembers His First Time Ever Seeing A Dinosaur While Making Jurassic Park

Jeff Goldblum Remembers His First Time Ever Seeing A Dinosaur While Making Jurassic Park

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire makes a memorable speech that begins with her saying, "You never forget the first time you saw a dinosaur" -- and surely many Jurassic Park fans will agree. Twenty-five years ago today the epic film brought to life creatures that have been extinct for eons, and the majority of cinefiles will never forget their first time watching it unfold. Of course, the experience was definitely different for the people who actually made the blockbuster, but as I discovered talking to Jeff Goldblum this past weekend, the feelings of awe and joy are certainly equitable:

Well, my gosh, the first time is when we shot in Kauai, those first two weeks of Jurassic Park, and one of the scenes that we did the first couple of days, I do believe, was when we got driven to this, you know, pasture, whatever it was, big grassy part of the heart of the terrain, and found that sick Triceratops. To the human eye, to my human eye, it looked like it was a real dinosaur laying there, because the puppeteers, the animatronic people, seven or eight of them - one working the blinking and the breathing... But it was real live sized - a live dinosaur! I almost had a, I don't know what I did, I had a fit of some kind of ecstasy.

I had the pleasure of hopping on the phone with Jeff Goldblum a few days ago as part of the press day for J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but, naturally, I took the opportunity to also talk him about his personal history with this legendary franchise. Using Claire's quote as a lead-in, I asked him how he remembers the first time he saw a dinosaur, and he responded by painting me a picture of what it was like to see Jurassic Park's sick Triceratops for the first time.

There are many incredible dinosaur sequences in Jurassic Park, from the roaming Brontosauruses, to the first Tyrannosaurus Rex attack, to the Velociraptor hunt in the kitchen, but the scene with the sick Triceratops is certainly top tier. If you had no idea that they had gone extinct, you might think that they brought in a live one to use on set, as the puppetry is simply masterful. What Stan Winston's studio was able to accomplish is movie magic in its purest form.

To save you the hassle of finding the Jurassic Park clip yourself so that you can re-experience the moment, you can watch it in the embed below!

This being the 25th anniversary of Jurassic Park, I hope a lot of you can find some time today to relive the amazingness that is unquestionably one of Steven Spielberg's greatest works. It will also help you get ready for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which arrives in theaters next Friday, June 22nd. Stay tuned for more of our coverage here on CinemaBlend, including more from my interview with Jeff Goldblum!

Dr. Ian Malcolm : [seeing the dinosaurs for the first time] You did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it. John Hammond : [as they gather around a baby dinosaur hatching from its egg] I've been present for the birth of every little creature on this island.
Jeff Goldblum will be in the next 'Jurassic World' movie

The Jurassic Park series was known to pack a punch. But the Jurassic World series came out even stronger, and its much anticipated sequel did a fantastic job in retaining that impression. Chris Pratt once again turned out to be the shining light in the cast while Justice Smith turned out to be as witty as ever.

12 Awesome Movies You Need To Watch Before They Leave Netflix In April

12 Awesome Movies You Need To Watch Before They Leave Netflix In April

We've all done it: we load our Netflix streaming queues with movies we've been meaning to watch again, or for the first time, after seeing them available. And yet, month after month, when it comes time to refresh the line-up, one thought recurs just as frequently: what am I going to miss? Well, if you're worried about what you'll be missing out on during the month of April, you're in luck! We've got a list of titles that you probably have in your queue and should be revisit as soon as possible. Otherwise, April's showers will wash away your last chance to enjoy these films without the aid of discs or other streaming methods.

Ace Ventura: Pet DetectiveWhile it's been threatened for some time now, movement on the proposed reboot of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective has just started to find its feet. After re-watching Jim Carrey's breakout film role, it's easy to see just why it might have taken so much time to get this one off the ground, as the original is pretty damned iconic. If you haven't heard a friend yell "Laces out" during at least one football game, or seen a friend walk out of the bathroom thinking "Do not go in there!" is the right joke for the occasion, you just might need to sit everyone down and give them a reason to question why anyone would try to lay a finger on this modern classic.

American PieHow's this for scary: if you were watching American Pie back in high school when the film was released, you might be old enough to have kids who you can introduce the film to on your own terms. Which would be an interesting exercise, considering how raunchy the film was considered back in the day. To think, we were all once Jims and Michelles, only to grow and become Jim's dad, or one of the various parental equivalents in the film's universe. So sit your kids down, prepare them for the majesty that is adolescent humor and a Blink 182 cameo, and pass the torch to your youngsters, should it be the right time.

Apollo 13While Ron Howard may have a new film in this year's Solo: A Star Wars Story, it's not exactly the sort of project you'd think he'd sign on for. The reason being that the man has made a name for himself mostly in prestigious biopics and films based around moments in history, with Apollo 13 serving as a particularly effective example of the latter. It's a film that not only wows movie fans, but probably gets a high school science/social studies class pretty pumped as well, considering the film's an exciting, but stoic, look at the mission that almost went to the moon. If you're in the mood for some history with your suspense, look no further.

BatmanBack in the day of Tim Burton's Batman, the film was received with a response similar to that of Batman Begins. With the franchise originating its film and TV arm through Adam West's campy and colorful adventures, nobody expected Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Bassinger to usher in an era of a darker, more stylistic version of the Caped Crusader and his adventures. These days, the Burton/Schumacher era is relatively tame compared to what Christopher Nolan would do with his version of the character. But back then, it was another seismic shift in Gotham City's history.

CaddyshackSome movies never age, despite being a product of the era they were produced in. While Caddyshack is definitely the epitome of an '80s comedy, it doesn't totally root its laughs in the decade. It's more of an '80s film in execution and approach, but not totally in the humor it weaves. Of course, one has to experience Caddyshack to truly get its brilliance, and if you're one of the folks that hasn't had the pleasure just yet, you should get on that. The gopher won't wait forever.

Never Let Me GoHave you ever seen a movie where the leads were just coming into their own as performers? You definitely have if you're a fan of Mark Romanek's adaptation of Never Let Me Go, as both Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield starred in this flick around the time their stars had just started to rise. Though if you dig deeper into this bittersweet sci-fi drama, you'll find even more familiar faces in co-stars Domnhall Gleeson, Andrea Riseborough and Sally Hawkins. Don't let this all-star cast fool you though, as there's a lot going on underneath the surface of this heart-wrenching film.

Small SoldiersEveryone remembers Joe Dante for Gremlins, and maybe Gremlins 2. But if you delve deeper into the man's body of work, you'll see similarly offbeat and quirky films that are worthy of your enjoyment, including Small Soldiers. One of Dreamworks' earliest major motion pictures, the film suffered from being released in the summer of 1998 by a relatively young studio still trying to find their feet. Which is a damned shame, as this story of killer toys waging war across suburbia is pretty funny, while also managing to find some sweeter moments between a boy and his toys.

The Shawshank RedemptionIf there's a movie that defines whata perfect film is, and always should be, The Shawshank Redemption is one of the prime examples of such a movie. No matter how many times you watch it, no matter what point it's at when you flip onto it during a channel surfing session, you're almost always bound to watch the film through to the end. It's a timeless production that doesn't age itself and always hits the same perfect notes it hit when it first played its tune. If you have the time, you should revisit Andy and Red one last time in April.

The Whole Nine YardsOut of all of the friends from Friends to embark on a film career, Matthew Perry could be argued as one of the most successful, thanks to a string of comedic cult classics that includes the next film on our list, The Whole Nine Yards. Pitting Perry's neurotic brand of laughs against Bruce Willis' killer cool demeanor worked like a charm with this sleeper hit from the turn of the century, and it's certainly worth a watch. However, don't let this tempt you into watching The Whole Ten Yards, no matter how convenient the prospect may be. This film truly was lightning in a bottle, and its subpar sequel only proved it.

The PrestigeThere's two ways to watch The Prestige: one way is to watch it as a casual fan, enjoying Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman's increasingly deadly game of one uppmanship all the way to its shocking conclusion. The other is to revisit the film with its secrets laid bare, truly taking in its message of how a magician, or in this case director Christopher Nolan, works their magic through all of the phases of a trick. Either way, once the act is over, you'll probably be sitting on your couch, stunned and shocked at what just happened before your eyes.

Kung Fu Panda 3As consistently as the Kung Fu Panda franchise has delivered, it still feels like Kung Fu Panda 3 is the forgotten entry in the series. With Jack Black's Po finally reuniting with his father, played by Bryan Cranston, the series only further expanded on its mythos by fleshing out Po's backstory with even more colorful detail. On top of the higher emotional stakes is an even greater threat, courtesy of J.K. Simmons' Kai - a villain bent on becoming the most powerful master in the kung fu world. A blend of action and emotion that only this franchise could deliver, Kung Fu Panda 3 is a fitting volume in Po's story.

Exit Through The Gift ShopStreet artist Banksy has always been an enigma wrapped in a riddle with a killer sense of humor. His art is provocative, as well as bitingly funny, and if anyone ever knew who he really was, he'd probably draw equal rounds of praise and damnation. Much like the man himself, Exit Through The Gift Shop is a film that is either an authentic documentary or a mockumentary that only helps perpetuate the mysterious aura of Banksy and his art. We'll leave it up to you to decide, but it's a decision that'll be fun to make once you've seen the film in question.

If you're curious about what you missed throughout March's Netflix purge, head over to the list of awesome movies that left the platform throughout this month. You still might have time to enjoy a couple of them before April 1!

Sherlock Holmes 3 Is Definitely Happening

Sherlock Holmes 3 Is Definitely Happening

Because Robert Downey Jr. has been so busy playing Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (along with detours for The Judge and Chef), the actor hasn't been able to revisit the other popular character from the printed page he's breathed life into: Sherlock Holmes. The last time we saw Downey playing Arthur Conan Doyle's astute detective was in 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but over the last few years there's been movement to get Sherlock Holmes 3 off the ground. Now it's official that Warner Bros does indeed plan to deliver this threequel to the masses, as the studio has scheduled it for Christmas Day, 2020.

Warner Bros made it official today that Sherlock Holmes will hit theaters on December 25, 2020, nine years after A Game of Shadows dropped. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will reprise Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively, but as THR reports, there is no director attached yet, meaning Guy Ritchie may not be back for Round 3. Written by Narcos' Chris Brancato, Sherlock Holmes 3 will compete against Sing 2 that opening weekend, and both movies arrive a week after Avatar 2, a follow-up that will have taken even longer to arrive than Sherlock Holmes 3.

The last time we saw Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes in A Game of Shadows, he'd tossed both himself and his arch-nemesis, Dr. James Moriarty, into the Reichenbach Falls, echoing what happened in Arthur Conan Doyle's short story, The Final Problem. As far as we know, Moriarty perished from the fall, but in the movie's final minutes, John Watson suspected that his friend might still be alive when he received a package a breathing device that Mycroft Holmes built that Sherlock took a liking to. Watson's suspicions were correct, as Sherlock had camouflaged himself within Watson's office, and once the good doctor left, the detective went to the typewriter where Watson was writing his memoirs and added a question mark to the words "The End." Since almost a decade will have passed for us since by the time Sherlock Holmes 3 comes out, no doubt a fair amount of time will also have passed when Sherlock and Watson officially reunite.

In the time since A Game of Shadows came out, the BBC Sherlock series released three more seasons, and CBS is still running Elementary, a fellow modern day adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes mythology. Still, it will be nice to have a more traditional Sherlock Holmes adventure unfold on screen. And with Robert Downey Jr. seemingly wrapping up his time as Tony Stark, that opens the door for him to take on Sherlock Holmes 3 and other projects, like The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates on how Sherlock Holmes 3 is progressing. In the meantime, you can currently catch Robert Downey Jr. reprising Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War, and don't forget to look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what other movies come out this year.
